Services

Educational Activities

Supplementary school sessions which include (learning one's mother tongue), English, Maths, Science and Arabic (to supplement mainstream education) and other aspects of education. This includes religious awareness workshops, traditional art, and trips to historical places to develop cultural awareness. The service has earned a reputation as a centre of excellence on issues related to Every Child Matters. The project has increased the number of students and would hope to expand within 2008. This project is based in Brentside High School, Greenford Avenue, Hanwell, London, W7 1JJ.

Recreational and Leisure Programmes

Afnaan held a Summer Holiday Play scheme during 2006/07 as well as day trips, camping holidays etc. Afnaan's services cater for people of all ages via dedicated project facets which enables us to be specific in our approach and thus provide a quality service, targeted towards specific groups of people. The family day trip during the summer was oversubscribed and in great demand. For many of the parents, these trips provided the opportunity to get away from inner city life, relax and spend quality time with their children.

Project Future Plan

a) We will provide a Saturday supplementary school to assist disadvantaged Black and Asian Ethnic Minority and Refugee children. This will support topics covered in English, Mathematics and Science under the National Curriculum. Three qualified teachers will be recruited.

(b) Outreach Work (Volunteer Involvement): Many disadvantaged BMER families are still an insular community, making them a hard to reach group. Five of our active volunteers will visit parent's houses and local schools to encourage more children to access our project. Outreach work will be carried out every month.

(c) 3 Outdoor Educational Trips: We will organise at least 3 outdoor Educational trips including Science museums, Cultural & Historical Heritage visits, Leisure centres and theatres etc.

(d) 2 Parent's Meeting and Training Workshops: Our targeted children are ethnic minority parents who have misconceptions and lack necessary parental skills to provide effective guidance for their children at home. We will conduct two parents' meetings on educational issues, parental skills and child development issues.

(e) Local School Linkage: We will work to develop partnerships with 3 local primary and secondary schools for referrals of children and local community groups, as well for joint referrals. Furthermore, we will also complement present supplementary school provision.
